| Abstract | To investigate the effect of mild hypothermia on the mammary cancer cell adhesion to intact microvessels wall, video microscopy was used to measure the adhesion rates of mouse normal mammary epithelial cells (Nmumg) and wild type (WT) in the post-capillary venules of rat mesentery in vivo. Individual post-capillary venule was cannulated and perfused with cells (~4 million/ml) at a rate of ~1 mm/s, 1) under normothermia, 2) after pretreatment of the microvessel with mild hypothermia. Our results showed that in ~60min, a) normal cells adhere poorly to microvessels in vivo while WT adhere to a much larger extent as compared to normal cells; b) in 60 min, mild hypothermia treatment decreased the number of adherent WT tumor cells from 9.9 (±±1.0 SE, n=7) to 6.6 (±±0.8 SE, n=6) cells/(5000 µm² vessel plane section). These results suggest that mild hypothermia such as winter swimming may be a potential tool for preventing cancer among people with pre-malignant tumors or who are otherwise at high risk for cancer. This study may shed new light on the relative contributions of cancer prevention by thermophysical method using mild hypothermia. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
