| Abstract | This work investigates how stability symmetry affects the solution tendency in two common MEMS sensors operating in degenerate parametric resonance. Prior work showed that a phase-squeezing event occurring prior to bifurcation can be used as a precise tracking parameter in mass sensing applications. Here we demonstrate that stability asymmetry has no effects on the probability of solution going to either of the two nontrivial stable branches of the pitchfork bifurcation. Experiments show that whether the device has perfect symmetry or not results in 50% probability distribution to either branch of the solution. In other words, stability asymmetry has no effect on the shapes of the potential wells. This finding provides confidence in tuning of MEMS devices without losing the general response characteristics of parametric resonance. Much higher sensitivity in parametric mass sensing can be achieved by tuning the stability symmetry with almost vertical slope. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
