| Description | This is a handwritten field notes diary ('Kheror Khata') or Shooting Script, which depicts several sketches and costume design of Satyajit Ray's film 'Ghare Baire' (International release title 'Home and the World'), based on the novel by Rabindranath Tagore. |
| Abstract | 'Ghare Baire' (The Home and the World) tells the story of Nikhilesh who is an educated, refined and benevolent zamindar. Nikhilesh encourages his wife to explore a life beyond the mundane. He treats her as an equal, an idea lost on many, during that period. Gradually as Nikhilesh encourages her to expand her horizons, she becomes more confident. Then enters Sandeep – a revolutionary and Nikhilesh's friend. Sandeep and Nikhilesh are contrasting personalities. Nikhilesh is silent to Sandeep's vitriolic temperament. Sandeep talks of high ideals, while Nikhilesh thinks about the ground realities. Bimala is swayed by Sandeep's idealistic words and admires him. While Nikhilesh is hurt by the change in Bimala's behaviour, he does not speak a word. Slowly Bimala comes to know that the love, respect and admiration that she had read of in books, was actually Nikhilesh's feelings towards her. How he treated her as an equal broadened her outlook towards life as a whole. Nikhilesh has a tête-à-tête with Bimala, and drives out to face a riot in the village, while the law catches up with Sandeep. Bimala is left to reminisce about all the events. Ghare Baire is based on the novel by Rabindranath Tagore. In depicting Tagore's work on the big screen, Ray has carefully made all field notes in this shooting script. He has sketched the interior decor of Nikhilesh's bungalow and pointed out every tiny detail in the set up. He has also done up the characters' costumes thoughtfully. The artist's mind is accurately captured in this manuscript. |
