| Abstract | 'Rabindranath Tagore' is a documentary film dedicated to the Nobel Laureate. The film summarises Tagore's journey starting from his home schooling, publication of his first poem and his failed attempt for higher education in London. It also mentions his marriage with Mrinalini Devi and his dream of creating an abode of learning in Santiniketan. It narrates his role in the Indian freedom struggle and how he gave up his knighthood after the Jallianwallah Bagh massacre. It also talks about his works, chief among them being Gitanjali which earned him the Nobel Prize in Literature. The documentary ends while mentioning Tagore's last days and his death at his birthplace on 7th August 1941. In this manuscript, Ray has performed a scene-by-scene autopsy of the film. He has done extensive research. In one place, he comments, “Rabindranath Tagore's last days were spent largely in Shantiniketan...in a lifetime of ceaseless works he has produced more than 50 volumes of poetry, over a dozen novels, numerous textbooks, essays, short stories and plays, well over 3 thousand songs and 2 thousand paintings. He might well have been content to rest on his laurels, but he was not.” |
