| Description | This is a hand written field notes diary ('Kheror Khata') or Shooting Script, which depicts several sketches and casting of Satyajit Ray's film 'Charulata' (International release title 'The Lonely Wife'), adapted from short novel 'Nastanir' (The broken Nest) by Rabindranath Tagore. |
| Abstract | 'Charulata' (The Lonely Wife) is based on Rabindranath Tagore's story 'Nastanirh'. The film displays the contradictions facing a cultivated and intelligent - yet idle - woman in a male-dominated society. Charulata's husband is a rich, liberal intellectual and the editor of a journal "The Sentinel", dedicated to the "propagation of the truth". Unfortunately, the husband, though an honest man and an idealist, fails to give enough attention to his wife. Charulata's intellectual perspective clashes with that of her husband, who looks down on literature, and in particular on that literature which relates to love. In the midst of this, Bhupati's younger brother Amal arrives. Amal and Charulata are instantly drawn to each other first as intellectual companions, before an awareness of attraction is recognized. To highlight the increasing distance between each of the three characters, the film has classical touches of cinematography underscoring the characters' ever-increasing distance from each other – that gives rise to the idea of the “broken nest”. Going through the manuscript, it is interesting to note that Ray had initially considered Sharmila Tagore for Charulata's role and Kali Banerjee for the role of Bhupati, her husband. This manuscript has more of such interesting trivia. It has Ray's meticulous field notes on this film. |
