| Abstract | 'Teen Kanya’ (The Three Girls) is an anthology film based on three stories of Rabindranath Tagore: 'Postmaster', 'Monihara' and 'Samapti'. Only two ('The Postmaster' and 'Samapti') of them were included in the international release. International version of the film is called 'Two Daughters'. The first story is about Nanda, a young man who leaves Calcutta to work as a postmaster in an isolated malaria-infested village. The postmaster is looked after by a young orphan girl, Ratan. His only solace in the village is in teaching Ratan how to read and write. The second story revolves around a businessman and his wife who is greedy for gold. She absconds him soon after his business flops but the husband cannot forget her and keeps hallucinating about his estranged wife. The third story is about a student, Amulya, who returns to his village after finishing his exams. His widowed mother is very anxious for him to marry, and has already picked out a girl. He rejects his mother's choice and, being forced to choose some girl, marries a lively tomboy who is not ready to give up her freedom. Teen Kanya is one of Ray’s most emotionally moving and psychologically profound works. This manuscript contains the shooting script for the stories written by the director himself. Readers will find how Ray planned to treat each scene cinematically. It also has lists of costumes and props for his pivotal characters. |
