| Description | This is a handwritten field notes diary ('Kheror Khata') or Shooting Script of Satyajit Ray's unproduced science fiction film 'The Alien' (Avatar/Mangal Kavya). Ray mentioned the title in Bengali as 'অবতার/মঙ্গল কাব্য' in the title page of Kheror Khata. |
| Abstract | ‘Avatar/Mangal Kavya’ (The Alien) was an unproduced Indian-American science fiction film which was eventually cancelled. It was to be directed by Satyajit Ray and co-produced by Columbia Pictures. The script was loosely based on ‘Bankubabur Bandhu’ (Banku Babu's Friend), a Bengali science fiction story Satyajit Ray had written for Sandesh, the Ray family magazine, which gained popularity among Bengalis in the early 1960s. It has been argued that Stephen Spielberg’s film E.T. is a rip-off of Ray’s story though there are no strong claims to support the argument. Ray mentioned the title in Bengali as 'অবতার/মঙ্গল কাব্য' in the title page of Kheror Khata. Since the film was not shot, and the debate raised many eyebrows, it is interesting to read Ray’s insight on the story through this shooting script for the film. It has dialogues and field notes carefully jotted by him for the production. Though the film was not produced, this manuscript serves as the next best thing available for curious readers and film enthusiasts. |
