| Abstract | 'Kapurush O Mahapurush' (The Coward and The Holy Man) isn't one film, even though these two short films - each just over an hour long - were released together. This Film is based on the short stories 'Janaiko Kapuruser Kahini' (The Coward) by Premendra Mitra and 'Birinchibaba' (The Holy Man) by Parashuram. Kapurush is about Amitabha who once refused to marry his lover Karuna in haste. He needed 'time' to think it over, the city was big and he was just starting to work. Many years later, his car breaks down and he is given shelter for the evening in Bimal Gupta's house – a successful tea planter somewhere in Darjeeling. The tea-planter is lonely in that part of the world with no neighbours nearby, hence he talks enthusiastically about his takes on life. Amitabha is now an established screen-writer who talks less but is astounded to meet Bimal's wife – Karuna. Mahapurush begins with a widower meeting a holy man on a train. Soon, the man is won over by the holy man and has convinced practically everyone in his family to become disciples of the guy and he comes to live with them. There is only one problem – he spouts nothing but hogwash and he is clearly a phony. It's a funny tale of how the charlatan is exposed with help from basic science and motivation from a lover boy in distress. This manuscript has Satyajit's Ray's handwritten field notes. He has painstakingly made comments and sketches for every scene. There are sketches of Bimal Gupta's home from Kapurush and Nibaran's drawing room from Mahapurush. In all, the manuscript shows Ray's thought process when working on these two films. |
