| Description | This is a hand written field notes diary ('Kheror Khata') or Shooting Script, which depicts several sketches, musical notation and casting of Satyajit Ray's film 'Seemabaddha' (International release title 'Company Limited'), based on the novel 'Seemabaddha' by Mani Shankar Mukherjee (Shankar). |
| Abstract | 'Seemabaddha' (Company Limited) is a social drama film based on the short story by Mani Shankar Mukherjee (Shankar). The film begins with the visit of Tutul, Shyamalendu Chatterjee's sister-in-law. Chatterjee is a sales manager in a big firm and lives with his wife Dolan. The daily life of the Chatterjees is recorded through the eyes of Tutul. She is given a tour of the life they lead – in restaurants, beauty parlours, clubs and race courses. Tutul seems quite critical of her brother-in-law and preferred him when he was a teacher. She represents the traditional middle class while Chatterjee is part of the young and ambitious crowd. The film centres on the conflict in their values. An interesting and farsighted film, Seemabaddha has the essence of a country in transition from the era of the British Empire and Gandhi to that of today. That Ray was the paragon of perfectionism is undeniable. His shooting script only testifies this claim. Readers will find it interesting how he has painstakingly mentioned the colours of Dolan and Tutul's sarees for each day. He has sketched the Chatterjees' interior decor as well. There is no doubt that only a mind as fastidious as his could make one such flawless film. |
