| Description | This is a hand written field notes diary ('Kheror Khata') or Shooting Script, which contains several sketches and casting of Satyajit Ray's film 'Pratidwandi' (International release title 'The Adversary'), based on the novel 'Pratidwandi' by Sunil Ganguly. |
| Abstract | Set against the backdrop of political turmoil in Bengal, based on a novel by Sunil Gangopadhyay, 'Pratidwandi' (The Adversary) tells the story of Siddhartha who has recently interrupted his medical studies after losing his father. His sister is earning, thanks to her youth and femininity, and although nothing specific is highlighted, her activities are perceived to be dishonourable. The younger brother is drifting towards shady political activity. Siddhartha's own encounters with women are sensitively portrayed. One charge that can never be made against Ray is lack of realism or anything less than utter honesty. He tells it exactly like it was. There are a number of eerie dream sequences which reminded one of the opening sequences in Bergman's Wild Strawberries. At some points the surrealism almost topples over when a whole crowd of job seekers waiting to be interviewed turn into skeletons in his imagination. Like Siddhartha, Ray is in love with Calcutta, city of revolt and history and squalor. This manuscript contains Ray's handwritten production notes. The audience will be able to understand how he reproduced the film's idea on big screen. For instance, it is fascinating to read the dialogues for the interview scene wherein Siddhartha gets into a brawl. Besides dialogues, the manuscript has his rich collection of notes, sketches and scribbles while he was working on the film. |
