| Description | This is a handwritten field notes diary ('Kheror Khata') or Shooting Script, which depicts several sketches and costume design of Satyajit Ray's film 'Joi Baba Felunath' (International release title 'The Elephant God'). |
| Abstract | This is the second film in Satyajit Ray's Feluda series. 'Joi Baba Felunath' (The Elephant God) is about an idol theft from the house of an old-time Benares family. Feluda, who is in Benares on holiday with his cousin and assistant Topshe and the inimitable Jatayu, is asked to help find the thief. The story moves along at a fast pace from the opening scenes when we see the holidaying trio arrive in rickshaws, with Jatayu having to constantly raise his folded hands to his forehead as they pass one temple after another. Ray is a master at showing the timeless beauty of this ancient city with its ghats, bazaars, havelis and gallis, and leverages this to the fullest to transform a mundane whodunit with a twist into a moody, sensuous, intensely funny and hauntingly musical piece of cinema which transcends its humble subject matter, but still delivers a darkly dreadful murder scene. Going through this manuscript, Feluda's followers will be intrigued to find how Ray translated his research for the film on big screen. Among other things, he has carefully drawn out the interior of Ghoshal residence which is the scene of crime in the film. He has also sketched every detail of the Calcutta Lodge in Benaras where Feluda, Topse and Jatayu put up during the investigation. In fact, these are just two examples from an otherwise exhaustive list of details Ray mentions in the script. |
