| Abstract | Even though the main objective in the energy sector in lower income developing countries remains to increase supply of energy to reliably and cost effectively to meet the needs of development, lower income countries are also embanking in efforts to drive their energy systems towards a long-run low-carbon development path. Transferring of funds, new technologies, early building of green infrastructure and institutional and regulatory capacity are fundamental to achieve both, the national needs for energy development and global needs to reduce the risks of climate change. The paper will describe the early challenges that the development of renewable energy is bringing to the power sector of such countries, especially regarding the development of required transmission expansions. Overcoming these challenges requires the introduction of appropriate planning processes with the right planning principles, and the establishment of sound regulatory frameworks that support such planning process by introducing efficient cost-recovery mechanisms. While transmission development to interconnect renewable energy enables a lower- carbon power system, it is important to understand the potential implications of transmission expansions to global emissions. The paper will describe a methodological approach to determine the GHG emissions implications of different transmission projects. While, direct emission from transmission projects may be low, the impact of transmission investment on emissions may be considerable especially for weak transmission systems. This suggests that transmission development does not only serves the objective of delivering reliable power to consumers, but also may be an important contributor to mitigate the global impacts of the power sector. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
