Abstract	As a new multilevel converter topology, active NPC (ANPC) converter is very competitive for utility interface of large wind turbines. To meet the harmonics limit according to standards, such as IEEE, VEDW and IEC, passive grid filter is usually required, which is bulky, heavy, and may cause parasitic resonance in the mains. This paper proposes a new 9-level ANPC converter topology to achieve filterless grid-connection with benefits in terms of cost, efficiency, power density and reliability of the system. The topology, operation and control of the proposed topology are analyzed, and the method of balancing the floating capacitor voltages is introduced. The hybrid concept is applied, which best exploits the individual advantages of different semiconductor devices. To illustrate the features of the converter, it is compared with other conventional and ANPC multilevel topologies. Simulation results are shown and validate the proposed concept.
