Abstract	Pavement inspection is a time-consuming but necessary task to ensure the serviceability of roads. Typical automatic inspections use both distance-based sensors, such as laser range finder and vision-based sensors, such as cameras. In this research, we propose a method that combines the features of both vision and distance sensors. This method includes a camera and two lights. The camera can retrieve images from the field by switching on different lights. We then extracted the different pixels of images taken from identical position and orientation. We implemented the method in a wheel-robot and conducted a field test. We tested the pavement with various types of distresses, including alligator cracking, longitudinal cracking, manholes, oil spillages, and road markings. The results show that the proposed method can efficiently categorize the features of the pavement images.
