Abstract	The five-phase tubular fault-tolerant linear permanent magnet (TFT-LPM) actuator is a newly investigated machine. Due to its high thrust force density, low force ripples and fault-tolerant feature, the actuator is suitable for the active electromagnetic suspension. In order to improve the performance of the actuator under open-circuit fault conditions, a remedial operation strategy is proposed. The approach is based on mirror symmetry of healthy phase current with respect to the fault location, and it is optimized to maintain the thrust force while reducing force pulsations and minimizing ohmic losses. Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed fault-tolerant current control strategy.
