Abstract	Storage of CO2 in deep formations such as saline aquifers, gas and oil reservoirs, and coal beds is a viable option for reducing the amount of CO2 released to the atmosphere. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the storage capacity in the target formation located in the central China. The CO2 storage capacity estimated through the quick assessment is compared with the “true” values obtained using detailed numerical simulations of CO2 and brine transport in a two-dimensional radial system. The estimated capacity values clearly demonstrated the different storage capacities in an open and closed system, with the former offering much higher storage potential. This study showed that when the seal permeability was below $10^{−19}$ $m^{2}$ the system acts like a closed-system, as only a small fraction of brine escapes through the caprock and baserock)
