Abstract | The logic resources required in the implementation of an FIR filter originate mainly from the operations of weighted summation. The common subexpression elimination (CSE) techniques provide the solution to minimize the number of adders needed for the implementation of constant-coefficient multiplications (CCM). Most of the previous works investigated the CSE methods based on transposed form, and paid not much attention to save the total bit-width, which is also critical for hardware implementation. In this paper, a modified strategy of the CSE, Decomposition and Combination of Partial Product (DCPP), is proposed to optimize weighted summations and achieve the objective of fewer adders and lower total bit-width. Since the strategy is also suitable for direct form, it can automatically realize the self-adaptable CSE stage by stage and achieve the minimum bit-widths of the adders in each stage. It is illustrated that by using DCPP with direct form, the total bit-width can be reduced by over 30% using almost the same number of adders as the conventional CSE method with transposed form in the implementation of high-order FIR filters. |

It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
