Abstract	This paper proposes an approach for the design of discrete event simulation models of large scale and complex manufacturing systems based on a UML representation of modular manufacturing entities and relationships. The approach simplifies the process of creating new manufacturing scenarios where by essential shop floor system parameters and logic can be modified frequently without in depth knowledge of simulation language. The use of object oriented design approach improves the clarity and the ease by which the manufacturing system is described and modified for the purpose of simulation. The paper provides an example of how this approach is used to verify the designs of a new assembly and packaging line.
