| Abstract | The paper presents a new protection principle for double circuit transmission lines of bipolar HVDC transmission system. By comparing the magnitudes of fault component of voltages on the bipolar lines, the faulty line can be identified. By comparing the polarities of fault component of currents at the ends of the faulty line, the internal faults and external faults can be differentiated. The principle can be applied for bipolar neutral grounding at both ends and monopolar metallic return mode operation. Different conditions are considered to research the operating characteristic of the proposed protection criterions, including short circuit faults on AC-side bus, commutation failure, lightning stroke and short circuit faults on dc transmission lines with different positions and transition resistances. Simulations results show the selectivity, speed, sensitivity and reliability of the protection principle, and the sampling frequency requirement of measuring instruments in the protection scheme can be 10∼ 100 kHz. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
