| Abstract | Summary form only given, as follows. In the paper, we present the design of a 35 kV Axially-Modulated, Cusp-injected, Large-Orbit Gyrotron amplifier (AMCILOG), which is a novel hybrid microwave device that utilizes the axial bunching mechanism of klystrons in conjunction with the energy extraction mechanism of cyclotron resonance masers. The results of the space-charge limited, annular-beam electron gun design are detailed first. The gun is designed to produce 1 /spl mu/s, 2A pulses at the design voltage of 35 kV with a magnetic compression of about 4. The design is completely characterized with respect to parameters such as velocity spread, peak electric field, emitter width, etc. We also present the experimental design of a system that is expected to produce tens of kilowatts of power in the X-band at the 8th harmonic of the cyclotron frequency. We detail the design of the magnetic field system as well as designs of the microwave input cavity and coupler, drift region, and output cavity. Both smooth wall and vane-type output resonators are described. Start oscillation curves are presented along with large-signal results that indicate potential efficiencies above 40%. |
