Indian Architecture: The Fourteenth Century

Content Provider Press Information Bureau : Kolkata
Author Havell, E. B.
Temporal Coverage 14th Century
Description The fourteenth century in Gujarat witnessed significant developments in architecture like Hindu temples at Mudhera, Jami Masjid at Cambay, etc., reflecting the cultural and artistic heritage of the region. The pointed arch, a distinctive feature of Islamic architecture, was introduced to India by Muslim architects. It allowed for larger and more spacious interiors in buildings. Muhammadan tombs are significant architectural elements in Indian Islamic architecture, reflecting the cultural and religious practices of the time. Many Muhammadan tombs were surrounded by beautiful gardens, creating serene and contemplative spaces that combined natural beauty with architectural elegance. The architecture of the fourteenth century in India is a testament to the diverse cultural influences, artistic expressions and architectural innovations that shaped the region during this period.
