Description | The transfer of power from the British Government to the dominions of India and Pakistan has created many urgent problems and is likely to bring about epoch-making changes in a country where progress has hitherto appeared to be slow and fitful. The willing surrender of such a vast empire—a fact unique in history—at a time when England must maintain her own political and economic position in a distracted world naturally provokes much thought. The justification of this momentous decision depends upon a study of the social and economic structure of the subcontinent as it was at the time of change. This book provides the material for this study, which sketches with clarity and impartiality the social and economic developments in that vast country in the immediate past. What the future has in store for the two new dominions is impossible to predict. In so far as it is possible, wise statesmanship will adapt the best features of the existing system to the changed situation, though not hesitating to utilize new impluses or to try fresh methods. A perusal of this book will help the reader follow such developments with sympathy and comprehension. This book seeks to capture the spirit of a nation in transformation, embracing innovation while cherishing its timeless traditions. As India strides confidently into the 21st century, it stands at the cusp of unprecedented change. With a burgeoning population, a robust economy, and a rich cultural heritage, India is rewriting its own story—one that is both deeply rooted in history and firmly focused on the future. |
