Description | The Hon'ble Justice, Mr. P. B. Mukherji, prepared a comprehensive report on the allegations made by the press against the police. The enquiry commission was appointed on August 1st, 1953, by a Calcutta Gazette notification by the Govt. of West Bengal to inquire into the allegations of obstruction to and interference with the activities of working journalists by the police during the agitation over the enhancement of tram fares and the assault on and arrest of press reporters and press photographers by the police on the Calcutta Maidan on the afternoon of July 22nd, 1953. Justice P. B. Mukherji was appointed to the Commission of Enquiry by a separate notification on August 7, 1953, by the Government of West Bengal. Many noted journalists, photographers and reporters of Hindustan Standard, United Press of India, Swadhinata, Ananda Bazar Patrika, Times of India, Statesman, Vishwamitra and Jugantar were examined by the commission. On behalf of the police, several witnesses were also examined. The commission submitted its report on November 2, 1953. The importance of this historical report lies in its potential to shed light on issues related to freedom of the press, police conduct and accountability during that period. The report provides insights into how allegations against the police were investigated and addresses issues related to press freedom, censorship, or the balance between law enforcement and media rights. |
