He wrote this story in the grave hour of trial and tribulation when the country faced an acute food crisis and cloth shortage, the people were panic-stricken, and the agonizing memory of the last Bengal famine haunted them. Daridra-Narayana is one of the millions of names by which humanity knows God, who is unnamable and unfathomable by human understanding. It means God of the poor, God appearing in the hearts of the poor. The articles of this book appeared in different issues in the Harijan Patrika between 25th January 1942 and 2nd June 1946.
