| Abstract | In the Field of Applied Linguistics (language teaching and learning) beliefs can, in general, be defined as opinions teachers and students have regarding the culture of language teaching and learning. Individuals develop a system of beliefs that contains all of the culturally transmitted beliefs, which may also affect their behavior. Beliefs may be socially constructed, contextually situated, and experiential. Research on beliefs has been carried out on various aspects related to teacher training. Few studies, however, have been performed on beliefs of teachers without a language teaching degree. This study focused on the beliefs of a teacher (without a language teaching degree) on the culture of English as a foreign language teaching and learning and looked for possible relations among her teaching and learning experiences, beliefs, and actions. This ethnographic case study, contextually based (a language institute in a satellite city in the Federal District of Brazil)., utilized the following instruments to collect data: classroom observation, semi-structured interview, questionnaire, and written narrative. Analysis of the data revealed beliefs such as: knowledge of English allows access to and inclusion in today’s globalized world; English cannot be learned in the public schools; English teaching is a business; students do not always learn English well in language institutes; teachers should be fluent and have overseas experiences; language teaching degree programs are related to classroom didactics, and it is a risk to hire teachers without a language teaching degree. Key-words:beliefs, culture, teachers without a language teaching degree, teaching and learning English as a foreign language (EFL). |
