Using prim a ry a nd second a ry sources of qu a ntit a tive inform a tion, we a n a lyze the perceptions of children a nd young people a bout discrimin a tory situ a tions in schools of thirteen cities loc a ted in the urb a n belt of Mexico’s southe a st region, m a king a distinction between indigenous a nd non-indigenous students by focusing on l a ngu a ge a nd self recognition. The a im is to contribute to studies on the soci a l phenomenon of ethnic discrimin a tion in educ a tion a l contexts.
