| Description | Thomas Henry Huxley, like Wallace, did not come from an affluent family. He became a member of many royal commissions and committees, which dealt with a variety of subjects from the control of fisheries to the construction of the school curriculum and the teaching of life sciences in schools and universities. Huxley declared his support for Darwin's theory because it did not contradict any known biological fact moreover, the known facts of development, comparative anatomy, and paleontology complemented each other and are fully explained by the theory. The subject of the origin of Man from the primates was not discussed in the "Origin", but erupted after the 1860 debate and the clash between Huxley and the Bishop of Oxford, Samuel Wilberforce. When Lyell finally accepted the Theory of Evolution by natural selection, he reminded Darwin of this joke, and added that he hoped to be permitted to live, now that he accepted the theory.
