| Description | Julian Sorell Huxley was the grandson of Charles Darwin's friend and ally, Thomas Henry Huxley. A zoologist by training, he was interested in ornithology and bird behavior. Huxley was very active in promoting public support for the Theory of Evolution, lecturing on the radio and television on the subject, and he had a role in building the “Modern Synthesis of Evolution”. Huxley's book, “Problems of Relative Growth”, presents a summary of a series of papers in which he describes the changes in body shape as an animal increases in size during ontogeny. Huxley suggested that discussions of evolution should be organized under several main topics, to facilitate a deeper understanding of the processes. Evolution must be dealt with under several rather distinct heads. Of these, one is the origin of species; another is the origin of adaptations. A third is extinction. And a fourth is the origin and maintenance of long-range evolutionary trends. Book Name: Milestones in the Evolving Theory of Evolution |
