| Description | Motoo Kimura (1924–1994) studied biology in Japan and was interested in botany, but was attracted to the mathematical theories of population genetics and evolution, in particular those of Sewall Wright and J.B.S. Haldane. To comprehend these theories he studied mathematics informally, and developed an important mathematical model of populations interconnected by migration (the “stepping-stone” model) as an extension of Wright's island model. Kimura received a Fulbright scholarship for advanced study in the USA, where he worked with the American geneticist James Crow at the University of Wisconsin, receiving his PhD in 1956. His association with Crow lasted several years and they co-authored a book$ ^{1459}$ . Kimura returned to Japan, and continued his theoretical work in population genetics and evolution at the Institute of Genetics in Mishima. Book Name: Milestones in the Evolving Theory of Evolution |
