| Description | Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire was a brilliant child. He studied law in Paris and obtained his first degree when he was only 16 years old. After the Revolution he chose to study medicine and then specialized in crystallography. At the age of 21 he was invited – as one of 12 professors – to join the staff of the new Museum of Natural History, where he was appointed Professor of Zoology. Cuvier accepted Geoffroy's invitation to join the institute, and the two became close friends. Both were interested in comparative anatomy and published several articles together. The friendship broke down, however, when a scientific controversy over philosophical principles turned into a bitter personal conflict. Like Cuvier, Geoffroy was an enthusiastic comparative anatomist. But while Cuvier used the comparative methods as a practical instrument for species recognition and classification, Geoffroy developed comparative anatomy as a scientific philosophy.
