| Description | John B. Sanderson Haldane had participated in applied scientific research since childhood. In 1957 he moved to India, became a citizen there, and headed the Department of Biometry and Genetics in Calcutta. Haldane published theoretical calculations of genetics in populations, as well as an idealistic forecast of the bright future that science will provide for humanity. Haldane, the idealist and true believer in Marxism, gave a lecture at Cambridge in 1923, entitled “Daedalus – or science and the future”. One of Haldane's most important contributions to the genetical Theory of Evolution was published in 1924. He listed a number of necessary preconditions before one could claim that a given trait may be under the control of natural selection: determination of the mode of inheritance of the trait; knowledge of the mating system; determination of both the intensity of selection; and the frequency of carriers of the trait in the population.
