| Description | Developing the systems approach to the design of systems requires a basic understanding of the foundation of systems theory. Constituent parts of this foundation include systems thinking that includes holism, emergence, interactions, synthesis, causality, and system mapping. In addition to these factors, the systems approach requires the concurrent execution of both systems engineering and systems architecting. These concepts are explained in the context of commercial aviation. These parts are both real and mental or intentional and unintentional. System mapping applies to all these concepts and how they relate to each other. Pioneers in the foundations of systems theory are Plato, Bertalanffy, and Checkland. These foundations are fundamental to the development of the systems approach. Hence, for the definition and design of any system, an understanding of the concepts is essential. It is also important to understand that the entire theory of systems is a reaction to the concept of reductionism advanced by Descarte. This concept asserts that individual components can be defined and assembled into a whole. Reductionism has been rejected by modern science and replaced with systems theory.
