| Description | The supply chain is treated as a separate and important topic in this book for two reasons: First, the supply chain itself is a system within the context of systems theory. The supply chain is one of the systems that includes both the aircraft and is exterior to the aircraft. The second reason the supply chain is important is that it is the source of significant risk. Although risk is not normally considered a topic in a systems theory context, it can be argued that it has a place because the risk associated with the supply chain arises because of the failure of the developers to consider the whole system or because they only consider one aspect of the system, namely, cost. The flaw was to ignore the technical consequences of an extensive supply chain. In addition, the developers frequently ignore the risks associated with second-tier suppliers. In the end, the lesson from this chapter is that the supply chain is part of the whole aircraft system and that risks associated with it are just as valid as any other risk.
