| Description | The purpose of systems architecting is to determine the arrangement of the parts of the system, both functional and physical. Once the parts and their arrangement have been identified, the performance of the parts and the whole system can be specified through systems engineering. To determine the arrangement of the parts, the stakeholder needs and the problem to be addressed must be determined first. One function of architecting is to determine the architecture that will manage complexity best. Complexity is a function of the number of parts, the number of interfaces, and the stochastic properties of the interfaces. Architecting applies to all aspects of the aircraft, both at the aircraft level and the subsystem level. The primary tool of architecting is the set of architectural heuristics that have been shown by experience to lead to the most effective architecture. Together systems architecting and systems engineering are companion disciplines which when executed together constitute the systems approach.
