Abstract | The protection of modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a research interest in the flexible DC transmission, particularly with the increasing penetration of distributed generators. A 21-level MMC converter is firstly modelled in PSCAD/EMTDC. Different types of DC fault characteristics are analysed in detail. Based on these transient features, a definition of signal distance is then introduced combining boundary DC currents. Furthermore, based on the difference of boundary signals, a protection principle for MMC-HVDC DC lines is proposed. Various simulations are carried out in PSCAD/EMTDC on different fault conditions, such as different fault resistances and distances. Finally, the proposed protection principle is tested under different fault types and locations. Simulation results show that the proposed protection principle is feasible and reliable. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
