| Abstract | In inverter motor drives an increasing fraction of faults is associated to the bearings damages induced by circulating currents. In particular, the capacitive couplings between the stator and the rotor give rise to a shaft voltage which, in turn, may produce the breakdown of the lubricating film in the bearings and the associated electric discharge machining (EDM) currents. By using an accurate circuital model for an inverter-driven induction motor for traction applications such damaging mechanisms, the statistical occurrence of the discharges and the associated energy level are evaluated. In order to investigate the relations among the currents amplitude and frequency and the influencing parameters of the drive, such as the cable length, the geometrical and physical characteristics affecting the bearings impedance, the Response Surface Method is applied. The most influencing parameter, the sensitivity level and the mutual effects induced by the parameters variations are obtained. The resulting information can be used in the design phase. The same approach can be applied also for correlating different performances of the motor with further influencing parameters. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
