Abstract | Proper scaling of the flashboard as the UV source for a UV-sustained opening switch, is the key to controlling switch parameters such as voltage and current gain. This paper shows how simple but key geometrical factors affect the overall switch performance. The analysis is started by the experimental determination of the UV light angular distribution from a single gap. Experimental data from two different gap configurations shows the variation of UV light angular distribution for a spectral range of 190 nm to 1060 nm. Analysis of the data gives the maximum separation between adjacent gaps in order to keep a uniform photon distribution. This UV flux is followed through the screen electrode and into the discharge region to set the proper flashboard gap density. The Radial Opening Switch project was sponsored by the Air Force Weapons Laboratory and monitored by the United States Department of Defense, Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
