| Abstract | A hydrogeological study was conducted with the objective to investigate the only currently known hot spring of Sofala Province in Mozambique with respect to the origin of the water, the discharge, and its chemical composition. Field investigations comprised a general land use survey, mapping of sediment and water temperatures, discharge measurements and on-site water chemistry as well as sampling for further chemical analyses and groundwater dating. Thermal water discharge occurs along a 100 m long NE–SW zone with water temperatures ranging from 42 to 64.5°C. The thermal water is a low-mineralized sodium-chloride-sulfate water enriched in phosphate, fluorine and nickel. The silica geothermometer, the silica concentration of 43 mg/kg and the ratios of Br/Cl and I/Cl of 2.5 × 10$^{–3}$, suggest that the thermal water stems from approximately 5,000 m depth and had a long residence time with silicate rocks. This points towards Gorongosa Mountain as the water source area. $^{14}$C dating suggests a groundwater age of 11,000 years.Une étude hydrogéologique a été réalisée avec pour objectif d’examiner la seule source chaude connue actuellement de la Province Sofala au Mozambique en ce qui concerne l’origine de l’eau, le débit, et sa composition chimique. Les recherches de terrain ont consisté en un inventaire général de l’utilisation du sol, la cartographie des températures des sédiments et de l’eau, des mesures de débit et de la chimie de l’eau sur le terrain de même que l’échantillonnage pour des analyses chimiques et des datations de l’eau souterraine ultérieures. L’écoulement d’eau thermale a lieu le long d’une zone NE-SW de 100 m de long avec des températures de l’eau allant de 42 à 64.5 °C. L’eau thermale est une eau chloro-sulfato-sodique à minéralisation faible enrichie en phosphate, fluor et nickel. Le géothermomètre à silice, la concentration en slice de 43 mg/kg et les rapports Br/Cl et I/Cl de 2.5 x 10$^{−3}$ , suggèrent que l’eau thermale provient d’une profondeur d’environ 5,000 m et a eu un long temps de résidence dans des roches silicatées. Ceci désigne la Gorongosa Mountain comme la région d’origine de l’eau. La datation au $^{14}$C suggère un âge de 11,000 ans pour l’eau souterraine.Se ha llevado a cabo un estudio hidrogeológico del único manantial conocido de aguas calientes en la Provincia de Sofala, Mozambique, para investigar el origen del agua, su descarga y su composición química. Las investigaciones de campo comprendieron una descripción de los usos de la tierra, un mapeo de los sedimentos y la temperatura del agua, medición de descargas y datos de la química del agua determinados en el sitio así como la obtención de muestras para posteriores análisis químicos y datación de las aguas subterráneas. Las descargas de agua termal se manifiestan a lo largo de una zona de 100 m con dirección NE-SO, con temperaturas que varían de 42 a 64.5 °C. Las aguas termales son de baja mineralización con predominio de sodio, cloruro y sulfato, y enriquecidas en fosfato, flúor y níquel. El geotermómetro de sílice, la concentración de sílice de 43 mg/kg y las relaciones de Br/Cl y I/Cl de 2.5 x 10$^{−3}$ sugieren que las aguas termales se originan a una profundidad de aproximadamente 5,000 m, y muestran largos tiempos de residencia en contacto con rocas silicatadas. As investigações de campo compreenderam trabalhos de pesquisa no terreno, mapeamento das temperaturas dos sedimentos e da água subterrânea e medições hidroquímicas in situ, bem como a recolha de amostras para posteriores análises químicas e datação. A descarga de águas termais ocorre ao longo de um alinhamento NE-SW com 100 m de comprimento e a temperatura das águas varia entre os 42 e os 64.5 °C. As águas apresentam uma mineralização baixa em sódio, cloreto e sulfato, e enriquecida em fosfato, flúor e níquel.
