| Abstract | Internet ́s use at home by children younger has increased considerably in recent years, and with it, the possibility of they ́re seeing inappropriate material or having contact with strangers when are online. This thesis aimed to investigate the relationship between parenting style (PS) and internet parenting style (IPS) and their implications in the use and exposure by children (7-12 years) to some risks online. 159 parents and 242 children who participated answered a self-administered survey. Taken together, our results revealed: excessive Internet ́s use by children; unawareness and lower requirement by parents on children ́s internet use; and correspondence between the PS and IPS. Furthermore, it also indicated that the style adopted can be a predictor of children's behavior on the Internet (the neglectful style was predominant in the sample and was also associated with higher levels of use and with of the exposure to risk). However, contradictory of the usually established in the literature, in our study the authoritative style wasn ́t associated with reduced use or reduced exposure of children to risk online, but the indulgent style was. These results, although must be relativized due to some peculiarities of the study, deserve special attention because they reflect ignorance and carelessness of parents concerning the management of the use (excessive) of the Internet by children, which certainly affect the proper guidance of children and consequently their responsible use and safe of the internet. |
