| Abstract | Comparison in note-taking of Japanese and Spanish students in their native language and in French (L2). Student’s note-taking is analyzed according to characteristics of their native language (Japanese or Spanish) and the language used (L1 or French as L2). Two short texts have been recorded; the first one in each student’s native language (L1), the second one in French as second language. These texts are conceptually and structurally similar. Three kinds of variables have been analyzed: (1) the abbreviation and substitution procedures; (2) the volume and the accuracy of notes compared to the teacher speech; (3) the information processing (new words, marks for lists and metadiscursive effects). Results show that in L1 and compared to Japanese students, Spanish students included more words in their notes as they listened to the texts, being therefore, more accurate in relation to the teacher’s speech. They principally use the abbreviation procedure of truncating words, while Japanese students use more complex abbreviation procedures. In French as L2, Spanish students, as well as the Japanese students, take more accurate notes. However, in French as L2, the Japanese students reduce their use of abbreviation procedures.
