| Abstract | h e purpose of this paper is to propose a rel ection on the role that communicative competence and communication in a mediation built within communities of practice and learning. h e starting point of our discussion considers these communities as socio-technical devices of information and communication at the heart of which, interactions, actions and behaviors act as vectors for the joint construction of knowledge. We locate in the i rst instance, communities of practice and learning communities to understand the operation and interest in sharing knowledge. We then show that participation, for communities of practice (Wenger, 1998) or socio-cognitive conl ict (Doize, Mugny, 1981), for learning communities, can revisit the notion of mediation through the idea of sharing and shared space. We i nally see how communicative competence (Hymes, 1982), in his report to the discourse and construction of a common sense (Schutz, 1987; Gari nkel, 1999) can be a lever for the joint construction of knowledge. h at is, for us, a feature common areas of communication and knowledge is at the heart of communities, it is the reference to the meaning and social values associated with symbols as a means of communication.
