| Abstract | In this thesis, the appropriation of media (films, touristic advertisements, photos) and social representations (discourses) of ethnic minorities are questioned. These representations are produced by the State and the market and are closely linked to social and economic development in Sa Pa district, Lào Cai province, Vietnam. The social and cultural standardization policy the 'selective cultural preservation' is still deeply embedded in traditions' framing practices and ethnic minority's development. Through a critical perspective on the concepts of agency, appropriation and resistance, the thesis results suggest that dominant political and economical views, represented by the 'developing and still traditional' minority image, are maintained. The Minister of Tourism, Sport and Culture and the Vietnam National Television of Lào Cai exemplify this tendency. However, the analysis of some media practices notably through a video workshop also illustrates that, locally, some actors can avoid those dominant representations or conform selectively to them. |
