| Abstract | Censorship is a phenomenon that has affected many works of universal literature due to the controversy that could be caused by dealing with a certain subject within a specific social context. Oscar Wilde’s only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray, was censored before its publication in 1891 because Victorian society did not approve homosexual insinuations and the lack of morals of his characters. The uncensored version was not released until 2011. The aim of this final degree project is to use the two existing versions of Wilde's work and their respective Spanish translations to contrast the differences between the symbolic themes that were mainly affected by censorship: homosexuality, sin, hedonism and narcissism. These two translations —censored and uncensored— will be discussed and decisions taken by translators will be studied and, if necessary, improvements will be proposed. Finally, conclusions will be drawn after verifying how reading the uncensored version has affected the comprehension of the work. |
