| Abstract | This paper reports new research data from an on-line reciprocal peer tutoring project for learning and improving Spanish and English. In the project, 9 to 12 years old students from Scotland and Catalonia were matched to act as tutors in their own language to their pair. It was intended that students through reciprocal peer tutoring improve both, their first language (helping the tutee), and a modern language (with their tutor's help). Through a methodology that combines a quasiexperimental study and a qualitative analysis of texts, pre-test and post-test results indicated statistically significant improvements in reading comprehension (acting as tutors) and writing (acting as tutees) for Catalan students. Scottish students improved only part of their writing (acting as tutees). The analysis of the texts, especially of the peer support offered, seems to reveal that the level of support offered by the tutor affects the tutee's learning opportunities. The results seems to indicate that when more support is given, the tutor gets more learning opportunities, but less for his tutee, and vice versa: the tutee learns more with less elaborated feedback -leading to lower opportunities for the tutor's improvement- where the error correction requires more efforts . The paradox could be resolved by adjusting the scaffolding support given by tutors, as discussed at the end of the article. |
