| Abstract | Listeria monocytogenes is a psychrotrophic food pathogen, with low infectious dose, causing severe disease with high mortality rates. Added to this, Listeria spp. can form biofilms in industrial equipment and utensils, and because of that, currently, members of the genus Listeria have become some of the most important microorganisms for the food industry. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the presence of Listeria spp. and Listeria monocytogenes in equipment and utensils of dairy industries. Samples were collected from a dairy plant in southern Italy and two dairies plants in southern Brazil, after equipment and utensils hygienization, using sterile swabs. After the samples collection, these were analyzed for the presence of Listeria spp., and suspected colonies were identified by biochemical methods described in ISO 11290-2:1998, Kit API Listeria® (BioMerieux) and BAX System (DuPont®). In total, 106 samples were analyzed, and among these, seven samples were positive for Listeria spp. and one isolate was identified as Listeria monocytogenes. These results supported significant corrective actions, since it was the first time that this microorganism was isolated in the Italian industry. |
