| Description | Polyurethanes are a class of polymeric materials that are very broadly employed in the industry. The solvent-based polyurethanes create many environmental issues. These issues can be limited by converting the synthesis of polyurethanes into green or less toxic, and this concept is well executed for the waterborne polyurethanes (WPU). In the case of WPUs, the precursors are suspended in water, and dispersions are made. These dispersions are widely used in coatings. Apart from the normal properties, such as high mechanical strength, biocompatibility, recyclability, etc., the WPUs have an excellent shape memory effect. Shape memory is the ability of materials to remember the shape in response to an external stimulus, such as temperature, electric, and magnetic field. The shape memory effect of polyurethanes makes them suitable in tissue engineering, scaffold preparation, 3D printing, etc. This chapter discusses briefly the features of WPUs and their shape memory effect.
