| Description | Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) have gained increasing interest in recent years and are considered an alternative solution for replacing solvent-based polyurethanes due to their outstanding performance, versatility, and environmentally friendly features. Stricter environmental regulations on the emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) seem to be a driving force for developing these high-performance WPUs. Moreover, because of the constant depletion of petroleum-based material and stricter environmental regulations, the polyurethane industry suffers from increasing prices and needs to tackle environmental concerns. Thus, companies must utilize renewable, green, and affordable bio-derived feedstock to develop polyurethane that is more suitable. Several bio-derived starting feedstocks, including vegetable oil, polysaccharides, cellulose, carbohydrate, and their derivatives, offer environmentally benign approaches to preparing WPU systems due to their reactive, functional, and active sites: hydroxyl groups, carboxyl groups, unsaturation, and chemically active phenolic structures. WPUs provide an opportunity to utilize renewable raw materials to develop polymers. Water utilization as a solvent with bio-based feedstock initiates a “green + green” strategy for the present polyurethane industries. Book Name: Eco-Friendly Waterborne Polyurethanes |
