| Description | A considerable part of the scientific community is devoting its efforts to develop sustainable routes to synthesize eco-friendly materials with competitive properties to petrochemical-derived materials. This chapter summarizes some of the efforts in this direction to develop waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) using bio-renewable sources. The introduction of this chapter describes the current status and development of the field of WPUs, followed by a precise description of synthetic approaches, such as prepolymer, acetone process, hot-melt, ketazine–ketamine, etc. Also, the fundamentals and basic chemistry for cationic, anionic, and zwitterionic-based WPUs are provided. This chapter provides fundamentals as well as advanced concepts to the readers for developing new ideas and approaches to obtain eco-friendly polyurethanes.
