| Description | Cardiac ultrasound (US), or echocardiography, is the noninvasive gold standard for assessing heart disease. Echocardiographic (echo) examination offers the best available balance between convenience, availability, cost-effectiveness, and diagnostic yield. Cardiac US delineates both the morphology and function of the heart, along with the appearance of contiguous great arteries and venous entries. Pleural and pericardial effusions, mass lesions within or around the heart, and most serious congenital and acquired diseases of cardiac valves, myocardium, and great arteries are readily visualized by US imaging. When Doppler echo studies are included, the velocity patterns of normal and abnormal blood flow can be tracked. Complementary Doppler modalities deliver quantitative estimates of heart function, intracardiac pressures, and blood flow. Book Name: Cardiovascular Disease in Companion Animals |
