| Description | Cardiac catheterization involves the insertion of sheaths, catheters, guide wires, and devices into the cardiovascular (CV) system to directly measure pressures and evaluate flow (hemodynamics), sample oxygen content or saturation (oximetry), or selectively inject contrast agents to outline and characterize vascular and cardiac structures (angiocardiography). Catheterization of most organ systems was performed by the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans and is by no means a modern invention. It was not until the evolution of radiography, from a novelty in the late 1800s to a diagnostic subspecialty by the early twentieth century, that the two techniques of catheterization and radiographic imaging were combined in order to visualize the gastrointestinal, renal, and CV systems in animals and people. Until the 1980s, angiocardiography and cardiac catheterization were done solely for diagnostic purposes; this remained the gold standard for characterizing CV disease until the advent of echocardiography, especially Doppler modalities. Today, purely diagnostic catheterizations are performed rarely because noninvasive tests such as echocardiography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide a rapid and accurate diagnosis in most cases.
